Multiculturalism & Social Justice Advocacy: Serving Diverse Clients in Challenging Times

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Story Behind the Headlines
These are challenging times for mental health professionals, who are being asked to ethically serve an ever-diversifying client population with pressing needs that have largely gone unmet. With a large body of research pointing to the inferior treatment received by marginalized groups, as well as a more hostile social and political climate, there is increasing recognition of the importance of multicultural competency and social justice training.

For Dr. LoriAnn Stretch, the solution is to train clinicians to understand historical and present-day cultural uniqueness a well as the convergence of multiple identities and self. Dr. Stretch will show how this increasing awareness of others and self will enable you to find a common language and engage in courageous conversations with your clients. You will discover how lessons from the past, as well as voices from the present, have converged to create a particular worldview that impacts the therapeutic relationship. You will learn interventions that take into account how to ethically empower your clients while also providing them essential supports. You will become more sensitive to issues of social injustice that your clients face, and how you can choose to be an advocate for change.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Describe a common language around multiculturalism and social justice
  • Identify and utilize the Four Agreements of Courageous Conversations
  • Analyze the historical and systematic influences on the client’s and practitioner’s worldview
  • Examine Self as a cultural being
  • Determine cultural appropriateness of client interventions
  • Evaluate a plan toward ongoing multicultural competence and social justice advocacy

“Dr. LoriAnn Stretch is an amazing person, professional, and speaker. She actively engages participants by providing hands-on experiential learning opportunities. Her presentations are easy to understand, clear, and to the point.
