Training Course Syllabus:

On a daily basis, we all live, shop, work, play and learn in buildings and structures. Seminar attendees will learn what a structural engineer does, from a structural engineer's perspective. This seminar will provide the attendee with useful background knowledge of the decisions that go into the design of each of the building types that can be encountered every day.

In addition to learning about the different structural systems that may be employed in a building, the various structural materials that can be used will be discussed. Steel, concrete, masonry, wood and light gage construction types will all be reviewed, along with discussions on existing buildings and anti-terrorism force protection design standards.

After attending the seminar, the attendee will be better prepared to plan new facilities, plan upgrades of existing facilities, begin the evaluation of existing buildings, identify potential terrorist vulnerabilities, as well as understand the basic 'lingo' that is bantered about between architects, contractors and engineers in the development of your project.

Seminar highlights:

  • Discover the differences and similarities between structural engineering and architecture
  • Discover what live loads, dead loads and lateral loads are and what their requirements are for different facilities
  • Become familiar with the different structural systems that may be used in a building and how each may affect the functionality, flexibility, cost and aesthetics
  • Learn about the use of different structural materials: steel, concrete, masonry, wood and light gage steel
  • Learn when a seismic upgrade of an existing building may be required and what approaches may be used
  • Learn an overview of current anti-terrorism force protection design standards as they apply to buildings

Learning objectives:

  • The attendee will be able to discuss structural systems.
  • The attendee will be able to identify requirements for structural engineers.
  • The attendee will be able to review fundamental structural engineering principles.
