PROGRAM DETAILS

Taking a Different Direction toward Bipolar Therapy
Dr. Jay Carter is uniquely qualified to teach this course. A Diplomate Candidate in Psychopharmacology (Prescribing Psychologists Register), he has conducted over 6,000 psychological and psychiatric evaluations. Dr. Carter draws his insight on bipolar disorder from both professional and personal experience. Not only has he spent years facilitating recovery for people with bipolar disorder at a county prison and the Caron Foundation (one of the top three drug and alcohol rehabs in the country), he has also felt the impact of the disorder at home: a number of his family members have had bipolar disorder, including his mother.

Dr. Carter insists on more than an intellectual understanding of the bipolar disorder. To treat this disorder in a state-of-the art way, one must have a FEEL for it. He delivers this seminar with an appropriate sense of humor, using stories and analogies to give you a good presentation of the disorder. When describing his teaching method, Dr. Carter says, "I try not to use technical terms so people don't get sleepy or have a headache by the end of the day. It is explained in terms that you would use to explain it to a client. Once you see the bigger picture, it helps the details fall into place and have more meaning." Dr. Carter strives to keep the evidence-based information so fresh that prior attendees report the updates and review, alone, are worth taking the seminar again. Attend this interesting, fun seminar, and walk away with both a better understanding of the bipolar disorder and a wealth of new knowledge to apply to other disorders.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Move beyond an intellectual understanding of bipolar disorder and into a more intuitive "feel" for the disorder
• Identify the primary focus factors of bipolar disorder and determine which are more successful, both long- and short-term
• Discover the ability to communicate a practical and empathetic understanding of bipolar disorder that can be passed along to clients and relatives fostering compliance of medication and reducing the risk of ending therapy and future episodes
• Show greater discernment between bipolar and ADHD children
• Examine and improve phenomenological understanding of the medications used in the treatment of bipolar disorder
• Demonstrate DSM-5 and improved diagnostic ability of bipolar disorder by having a greater understanding of the disorder, the discernment from, and co-morbidity with other disorders
• Develop diagnostic savvy outside the DSM-IV and proposed DSM-5
• Discuss the co-morbidity of substance abuse with bipolar disorder
• Develop an awareness of pregnancy issues, genetics, the latest research, and forensics related to bipolar disorder

PRESENTER'S BIO

JAY CARTER, Psy.D., FPPR (Cand.), DABPS, is a licensed clinical psychologist and recognized national expert on BiPD. He is a Diplomate Candidate in Psychopharmacology (FPPR cand.) and is certified in Psychoactive Substance Abuse Disorders by the American Psychological Association. Dr. Carter worked two and a half years as a prison psychologist and six years as a psychologist at the Caron Foundation (one of the top three substance rehabs in the country). He has testified in local, state, and federal court. During his career, he has completed over 6,000 psychological and psychiatric evaluations. He spent two years evaluating children in the Wraparound Program to assess the strengths and needs of high-risk children. Dr. Carter's understanding comes from not only the clinical aspect but his personal life, as well. Growing up with a mother who had bipolar disorder equipped Dr. Carter with a wealth of unique insight that has helped him to both better understand this disorder, himself, and offer a different slant of understanding and chronology of treatment for others trying to live with it.
