Training Course Syllabus:

PROGRAM DETAILS

Parkinson's Disease is the number one neurological disease today. There are currently 1.5 million people in the United States with a Parkinson's diagnosis. With a steadily rising aging population, as well as a rapid increase in young adults being diagnosed with Parkinson's, it is essential that rehabilitation professionals are knowledgeable about the disease, understand how it differs from related movement disorders and become proficient in effective rehabilitation and therapeutic treatments.

This one-day seminar will discuss "Relearning Kinesia Treatment" (RKT), a sensory-motor reactivation treatment designed for people with Parkinson's and related movement disorders. RTK utilizes state-of-the-art modalities and techniques in a staged sequence to improve balance, stepping gait, posture, ADL, general strength, flexibility, masked facies, affect and general well being. Current surgical options and pharmacological treatments will be reviewed to give the participant a complete understanding of the Parkinson's patient. Attendees of this program will learn practical and proven techniques to produce positive outcomes with their patients.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dorian Brown, MA, OTR/L, is a licensed Occupational Therapist and has worked with Parkinson's patients for 22 years, 12 of those years as an Occupational Therapist. She began the first Parkinson's Support Group in Ohio in 1981 at Riverside Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. Due to the success of Ms. Brown's exercise and educational programs, the Riverside Parkinson's Support Group became a part of the educational curriculum at prominent nursing schools such as Toledo Hospital, Medical College of Ohio, and St. Vincent's Hospital. Her interest in Parkinson's drew Ms. Brown back to school to become an Occupational Therapist specializing in Parkinson's. Ms. Brown has been an Occupational Therapist since 1993 and in 1995 she created and patented Brown-Wuest Relearning Kinesia Treatment (RKT), which is both an Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy program for Parkinson's Disease and related movement disorders. In 1998, she was voted the Outstanding Therapist in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky by Vencore, Inc. A frequent presenter on educational television, at medical conferences and in the community, Ms. Brown gained national recognition in 2002 when her Parkinson's treatment (RKT) was presented at the Neurological Conference in San Diego, California as a research project in coordination with the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is an experienced consultant and instructor for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Registered Nurses and other health care professionals. In 2003, RKT was the subject of a documentary on Parkinson's Disease produced by Gayna Bassin at Raymond Walters College. She has also developed and trained Therapists to lead Functional Maintenance Exercise groups based on Relearning Kinesia Treatment (RKT) at Western Hills Retirement Center, Sycamore Senior Center, Mason Community Center and Dearborn County Athletic Club in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Ms. Brown's experience helps make her a knowledgeable and skilled instructor.
