Training Course Syllabus:

PROGRAM DETAILS

Children with developmental disabilities are frequently less active, less fit
and at greater risk for problems associated with overweight and obesity. Many
also suffer academically, socially and in terms of improving or maintaining
independence as they mature. In 1991, physical therapist Tim Erson developed the
Courageous Pacers Program to address activity challenges faced by children with
special needs. In his pioneer work with preschool teacher Belinda Cardenas,
eight students with special needs walked 100 miles and lifted 10,000 pounds in a
school year.

Attendees of this hands-on seminar will learn practical methods and strategies
to improve function, educate caregivers and promote lifelong habits of fitness.
Through the Courageous Pacers Program, children in the classroom setting improve
active movement, strength, range of motion, postural control, gait, breathing,
language, social skills and self-esteem as well as academics. The program is
functionally based, highly motivational and can used by individuals or groups.
It offers an excellent opportunity for inclusion, and it can be adapted for all
ability and age levels, including adults. Course participants will learn skills
they can utilize immediately upon returning to their work setting.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • The relationship between physical activity and performance at school

  • The knowledge and skills needed to implement a Courageous Pacers Program
    for a class or individual

  • Practical, fun and functionally based movement activities that can be used
    in the classroom

  • Simple ways to make and adapt weights using readily available materials

  • More than a dozen easy-to-do pre- and post-test measures to document
    student progress

  • Discover practical strategies to: promote physical activity, prevent
functional decline, enhance student readiness, combat pediatric obesity,
    facilitate carryover of therapy-related activities

  • Learn thematic flexibility, functional strengthening and skill building
endurance exercises for children with mild, moderate and severe movement
    and/or cognitive difficulties

  • Identify IEP goals and objectives that connect function and fitness

  • Add health promotion to the services you provide to children and adults
    with special needs
