PROGRAM DETAILS

The incidence of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has increased dramatically in recent years. While there are often gait, balance and motor control deficits associated with ASD, physical therapists often struggle to understand where they fit into the overall treatment picture. It is essential that physical therapists and related practitioners know how to effectively treat this growing population.

This one-day seminar will provide a treatment approach for therapists based on recent findings in neuroscience about brain changes in autism and difficulties integrating functional systems in the autistic brain. Specifically, therapists will address motor control and movement problems in the presence of multiple competing functional and environmental demands by using behavioral strategies to effectively shape movement patterns.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Understand the pathophysiology of Autism and the underlying neurological basis
  • Discuss behavioral approaches to shape movement behaviors
  • Analyze movement and environmental awareness
  • Apply the Functional Integration Approach to case studies
  • Understand the pathophysiology of Autism and the underlying neurological basis
  • Learn how to use behavioral approaches like reinforcement, discrete trial and natural environment training to shape movement behaviors in people with autism
  • Understand how to appropriately evaluate and document to obtain fair and reasonable reimbursement
  • Develop a method to analyze movement and environmental awareness by understanding how people with autism have problems integrating functional brain systems

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

DAVID RIZZO MS, PT, is a licensed Physical Therapist who works with adults having autism at a Developmental Center in New Jersey, as well as autistic and developmentally disabled school age children in their homes. His young daughter has autism and this has fueled his interest in this special population. Mr. Rizzo has developed a treatment approach called Functional Integration that analyzes movement problems in relation to competing functional brain systems and uses behavioral principals to shape desired outcomes. Another current project involves the use of sports training as a model for social skills development. A graduate of Arcadia University (formerly Beaver College), Mr. Rizzo has practiced physical therapy in a variety of settings in addition to the above mentioned, including nursing home rehabilitation centers and home care.
