Training Course Syllabus:

Assessing & Treating Attachment Disorders in Children and Adolescents Seminar

Attachment should be an inevitable part of life. However, for many individuals, this is not the case. Those individuals who suffer from attachment issues live a confused, superficial life at best. Many have been misdiagnosed, given ineffective treatment and labeled as resistive to treatment. This only increases their defensiveness, anger and the feeling of being crazy or different, which leads to further difficulties for the individual, families and society as a whole. The disorder and its symptoms are almost always the driving force for disrupted adoptions and foster home placements, stalled treatment, stressful and frustrating case management and "difficult" individuals. The attachment/relationship issues are complex and oftentimes masked by ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), anxiety, ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). The families have become embarrassed and enmeshed in the behaviors and rituals of their child/adolescent who suffers from attachment/relationship issues. They feel isolated and often are scapegoats for the problem. Without appropriate interventions, families simply cannot withstand the stress and will dissolve.

This seminar is designed for those who have little understanding of attachment issues as well as those who work daily with this disorder. Also, the seminar will help the participants to explore their own feelings and basis towards attachment issues and the individuals/families they serve that have this disorder. Information will be discussed on the process of attachment and the problems that cause the attachment process to not be successful. During this seminar, the participants will learn to identify signs and symptoms of attachment issues. Attendees will leave the seminar with new understanding, skills and interventions to assist in the treatment of their most frustrating and challenging cases. Families will leave with a sense of hope and helpful strategies and techniques that are proven to assist the child/adolescent in developing improved attachment and relationships.
