Functional Fitness After 40: Post Rehab and Preventative Health Medicine for Baby Boomers and Older Adults - Fitness/Physical Therapy Seminar

PROGRAM DETAILS

Exercise for Baby Boomers and Beyond

In today's rehabilitation and fitness settings, there is an increased emphasis on client education; especially in regard to home exercise programs following discharge from formal therapy. In addition, the rationing of health care services as a result of managed care and Medicare allows patients less time in structured therapy and requires them to continue their exercise programs outside the formal rehabilitation setting. Furthermore, as the population is becoming "grayer," they are also more active during the later years. For this reason, there has become a great need to educate active older adults to exercise safely and effectively so that their quality of life remains stronger and long-lasting. This is where the great challenge/opportunity arises. Many rehabilitation professionals are skilled in developing and implementing therapeutic exercise programs for injured clients, but lack the strength to design plans for healthy older adults. In contrast, many fitness specialists are experts in program planning for the healthy population, but do not have a solid knowledge and skill base in program development distinctively for special populations.

This informative one-day seminar will examine how the rehabilitation and fitness professional can best develop exercise and fitness programs for post-rehabilitation and healthy active adults. The continuum of care after the discharge from formal therapy will be addressed specifically.

Participants will also learn to develop programs for the healthy, active adult using critical analysis of the principal components of physical fitness as they specifically relate to the physiological and psychological changes for today's baby boomers. Attendees will leave this seminar with new approaches to working with this population that they can apply in the clinic the very next day.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Identify risk factors specific to exercise with the over 40 population
  • Outline a subjective and objective exercise program design assessment procedure that includes all primary factors
  • Develop a safe and effective exercise and fitness program explicitly for the older age group
  • Analyze specific exercises for their appropriateness for active adults
  • Discuss the effects of aging on musculoskeletal health and report on the trainability of older active adults
  • Give examples of why adaptations to exercise can differ significantly among participants
  • Outline the principal components of physical fitness and their interrelationship in exercise program design for on-the-go adults
  • Examine and gain an understanding of exercise program design rationale based upon the physiological and psychological changes of individuals over 40
