Training Course Syllabus:

PROGRAM DETAILS

As a professional, you probably wish you had stayed awake more in neuroanatomy and physiology class. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced therapist, it is often difficult to grasp the complexities of the central nervous system and how dysfunction in specific structures translates into communication and language deficits.

This interesting and informative one-day seminar examines how speech and language are represented in and controlled by the central nervous system. Attendees will outline the complex architecture of the human central nervous system and discuss the normal function of the central nervous system as well as dysfunctions that occur in neuropathological conditions. Emphasis will be placed on language formulation and comprehension, brain structures and pathways thought to serve speech and language and neurological disorders of communication. Therapists will discuss the anatomy of the brain, spinal cord, ventricles and cranial nerves. The major connections and pathways will be explained to enable clinicians to interpret clinical information and relate damage to clinical performance. Therapists will leave the seminar better able to draw conclusions about the neurologically impaired client in order to complete more efficient assessments and establish treatment goals.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Complete more efficient assessments and establish treatment goals for the neurologically impaired client

  • Discover how the anatomy and physiology of the meninges, ventricles and cranial nerves affect speech, language and cognition

  • Examine the sensory and motor pathways and their role in human function

  • Analyze clinical case studies on neurological disorders of communication

  • Examine the general structures of the brain, how the brain is designed and the pathways for various types of information

  • Demonstrate knowledge of neuroanatomy and physiology, with an emphasis on brain behavior correlates and the functional organization of the brain

  • Discuss the cranial nerves and their role in functioning in the human organism

  • Identify major sensory and motor pathways and discuss their role in daily functioning

  • Apply brain structures to the performance of language, speech and cognition and describe the etiology of various neurogenic communication disorders

  • Identify neurological structures most likely affected when given clinical examples in case study format
