PROGRAM DETAILS

For many years, cancer was one of the most serious contraindications for therapeutic massage. Therapists were led to believe that massage modalities could possibly facilitate the spread of cancer throughout the patient's body. This unfounded and undocumented cancer scare left the nearly 10 million Americans with a history of cancer deprived from the compassionate touch of an experienced therapist. Now existing data strongly suggest that appropriate massage/bodywork therapy provided by a well-trained therapist is safe, does not contribute to the spread of cancer and is an effective complement to the medical and health programs offered to people with cancer.

Therapeutic massage for those experiencing cancer has been documented to reduce stress, decrease anxiety, relieve depression, increase comfort levels and provide spiritual and emotional, as well as physical, support for both patients and care providers. This one-day seminar dispels the myth that massage is harmful to the cancer patient and instead demonstrates the benefits of this healing art. Participants will examine the pathology, risk factors and treatment options for the most common types of cancer. Current research supporting cancer massage, treatment and follow-up plans, and techniques applied in various clinical and non-clinical environments will be discussed as well. To ensure a rich learning experience, attendees will perform hands-on massage techniques and discover how to employ techniques appropriate for any stage of the cancer experience. Participants will leave feeling refreshed and enlightened about treating this greatly underserved population.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
