Deep Tissue Massage: Safe and Effective Techniques for Common Problem Areas - Massage / Healthcare Training Seminar

PROGRAM DETAILS

Deep Tissue Massage for the Neck, Back, and Other Problematic Areas

It is estimated that one in four Americans suffers from some form of musculoskeletal dysfunction. The areas most commonly affected are the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and lower extremities. Contributing factors include work injury, personal injury, home and vehicular accidents, sports, and aging. Deep tissue massage techniques can greatly benefit sufferers of chronic pain and injury. However, there is a general misunderstanding of the concept of deep tissue massage from the perspectives of the patient/client and the therapist. Deep tissue massage can injure both the client and the therapist if not performed appropriately.

Participants in this one-day seminar will learn what deep tissue massage really means so that you can evaluate each client and condition to determine its appropriateness. You will examine the anatomy of common injuries, assess safety considerations for both the client and yourself, and establish protocols to determine proper duration of treatment. Participants will perform deep tissue massage techniques on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and lower extremities in a hands-on lab. You will develop manual techniques using the thumbs, fingers, fists, elbows, forearms, palms, and knuckles. The concept of mechanical aids will be discussed to determine their value for performance of deep tissue massage. The hands-on experience gained in this seminar will help attendees provide safer, more effective deep tissue therapy beginning the very next day.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Discover indications and contraindications for DTM
  • Conduct a thorough evaluation, including palpation of affected area, to determine muscles/joints that need attention
  • Perform hands-on application of DTM to the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and lower extremities
  • Define deep tissue massage and determine when its use is appropriate
  • Examine the anatomy of common injury areas that can benefit from DTM
  • Evaluate the affected area to determine the proper muscles to work
  • Perform manual deep tissue massage techniques to the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and lower extremities
  • Discuss the concept of mechanical tools to determine their value in administering DTM
  • Integrate safe body mechanics into the application of deep tissue massage techniques
  • Examine the importance of fascia in DTM application

What You Should Bring
Participants are asked to bring the following for the workshop portion of this seminar:

  • Massage table and face cradle (if you are not a massage therapist but have access to a table, please bring it)
  • Two sheets or two large towels
  • Two-piece bathing suit or sports shorts and sports halter (women)
  • Sports shorts (men)
