Training Course Syllabus:

Upper extremity function is vital to practically everything we do -- self care, work, leisure and recreation. A traumatic event that results in fractures of the upper extremity can be highly debilitating. The goal of fracture rehabilitation is to restore joint mobility, muscle function and coordination to enable the individual to resume meaningful activities of daily life. In addition, fracture rehabilitation is geared towards minimizing or eliminating pain and associated soft tissue complications. To accomplish these goals, therapists must have a fundamental understanding of anatomy and biomechanics of the upper extremity as well as bone and soft tissue healing.

This one-day course provides practical, applicable rehabilitation skills for common upper extremity (UE) fractures from the shoulder to the wrist. Key anato-mechanical concepts and pathomechanics of UE fractures will be presented. Participants will also examine evaluation and treatment techniques for fractures including splinting, therapeutic exercises, manual therapy and functional training. Practical considerations for home instructions and caregiver education will also be discussed. Therapists will leave the seminar with treatment techniques and rehabilitation strategies that can be implemented into practice the very next day.

  • Explore 20 common fractures and related complications in the shoulder, elbow, wrist and forearm

  • Perform thorough evaluation through physical examination and functional assessment measures

  • Develop practical patient and caregiver instructions and home programs

  • Utilize splinting, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, physical agents and modalities in the appropriate phases of fracture healing

  • Describe the biomechanics of the upper extremity

  • Identify common upper extremity fractures and their pathomechanics

  • Apply knowledge of biomechanics and tissue healing in the evaluation of fractures

  • Recognize potential pathological signs or emerging complications associated with upper extremity fractures

  • Determine effective treatment strategies throughout the phases of fracture healing

  • Discover practical strategies for providing patient and caregiver instructions

  • Explore various outcome measures used in upper extremity rehabilitation
