Training Course Syllabus:

Explosive Anger

Clients with Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, as well as several of the Cluster B Personality Disorders, share common deficits in emotional and behavioral regulation. These deficits can often result in explosive outbursts that damage relationships, disrupt work or school performance, contribute to low self-esteem, and promote depression and anxiety. Explosiveness of this kind is not age discriminate. We treat clients who are expelled from daycare or school, lose employment and are divorced because of poor anger management and loss of control.

Taught by Tracy Underwood, Ph.D., this workshop provides useful interventions based on the most current research and experience for individuals with explosive anger. The neuroscience behind explosiveness will be explored and participants will gain useful tools for utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) within an experiential modality. Clinicians will be provided with treatment plans for explosive adults, teens and children. Dr. Underwood will discuss common treatment challenges such as noncompliance, poor motivation and resistance and offer recommendations for each challenge. Support and interventions for family members of explosive clients will also be discussed. Finally, the role of violence in the media will be addressed. Clinicians will leave the seminar with proven techniques that help regulate their emotionally reactive clients.

  • Understand the compromised neural systems involved in emotional dysregulation
  • Review the current research supporting CBT and DBT as effective interventions for explosiveness
  • Learn the most effective CBT and DBT tools for managing explosiveness using an experiential learning approach
  • Review treatment pitfalls and how to address them
  • Identify the prevalence of anger attacks in mood disorders, impulse-control disorders, personality disorders and conduct disorders
  • Understand the compromised neural systems involved with emotional dysregulation
  • Describe the most effective CBT and DBT tools for explosiveness based on the most current research
  • Engage family members of explosive clients in a therapeutic system of alliance to increase treatment effectiveness
  • Understand the importance of individuating your treatment plans and tools based on age, maturity and narcissistic vulnerabilities
  • Discover how to address common treatment pitfalls such as client resistance, low motivation, family sabotage and in-session explosiveness
  • Identify the sources and prevalence of violence in the media and its impact on suicides, copycat crimes and aggression

TRACY UNDERWOOD, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice. Dr. Underwood obtained her BA from the University of Texas in 1988 and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Texas Tech University in 1996. She specializes in Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, ADHD, anxiety disorders and depression. Many of her clients have problems with affect regulation and she has designed protocols teaching them skills to better manage their symptoms. Her strategies have been effective with children, adolescents and adults.

Dr. Underwood worked in the Department of Psychology at Childrenīs Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, before opening her private practice. In that setting, she provided individual, family and group therapy for inpatient, day treatment and outpatient child and adolescent populations. While in that role, Dr. Underwood participated in a NIMH study as a cognitive behavioral therapist investigating the effectiveness of CBT with depressed adolescents. She has appeared on several local news programs providing information on topics such as explosive children, sibling rivalry, effective discipline and others. In addition, her name has appeared as an expert in various national magazines on topics related to development.

"Dr. Underwood shows remarkable understanding of cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral therapies and how these can be applied effectively with explosive clients." - Roger Robinson, M.D., Child Psychiatrist, Clinical Faculty, UT Southwestern, Dallas, Texas

"Very creative tools useful for helping explosive patients in an easily understood and accessible format. Dr. Underwood has combined her grasp of CBT and DBT with years of experience and the latest research." - Linda Hurley, PhD, Clinical Psychologist, North Richland Hills, Texas
