PROGRAM DETAILS

There are many pertinent health conditions that benefit greatly from exercise and fitness. Health care clinicians will often prescribe exercise as a preventative and/or rehabilitative measure for various conditions. The most important first step in any training system is the preliminary assessment/testing program designed to surface a client's strengths, weaknesses and individual differences. It provides a framework for working with an individual client—whether an athlete preparing for competition, a business professional looking to maximize health and fitness in the face of extraordinary overload or a cardiac patient returning to full function.

This one-day seminar focuses on the fundamental principles of exercise testing and program design for healthy, high risk and athletic populations. The course is structured to underscore the cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic and muscular responses to cardiorespiratory (aerobic) exercise and the implications of exercise testing for designing programs to enhance health, fitness and performance based on individual responses and needs. A fully integrated testing and training system grounded in science, meticulous attention to detail and quality assurance will be presented. By blending leading edge technology with the most recent advances in exercise science, this program bridges the gap between science and fitness.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Describe the science behind cardiopulmonary (aerobic) exercise testing and program design
  • Identify the components of a pre-exercise assessment, risks and benefits of exercise and risk stratification algorithms
  • Determine how to use the data from an exercise test in formulating an individualized program design—from cardiac patient to elite athlete
  • Discuss the current and future application of exercise testing in the fitness and medical arenas
  • List the components and importance of a preliminary assessment including a health and medical history, health appraisal, and informed consent prior to participation in physical activity
  • Outline how to select appropriate procedures to test the health, fitness, and/or performance of various types of clients—from high risk to athletic populations
  • Identify the purpose of and how to conduct various health, fitness and performance testing, including equipment operation; medical, pharmacological and safety concerns; monitoring of clients; and test termination criteria
  • Identify the methods for interpreting various health, fitness and performance test results
  • Describe the importance of exercise prescription for the safe, appropriate and effective enhancement of health, fitness and athletic performance
  • Define the manner in which the body responds (acute) and adapts (chronic) to the increased demands associated with physical activity
  • Identify the principles that govern the body's adaptation to various training techniques
  • List the components of an exercise prescription, including initial fitness level, frequency, intensity, duration, type and progression
  • Identify the various factors that must be given special consideration in exercise prescription, such as gender, age, fitness level, health status and individual responses
  • Identify nutritional needs relative to aerobic training and fitness
