Training Course Syllabus:

Dental-Medical Cross Coding

Dentistry today is truly becoming the field of dental medicine due to the realization that the body can have an effect on conditions in the mouth and, conversely, oral conditions can have an effect on body systems. Due to the growth of documentation on the link between the mouth and the body, more and more medical and dental carriers are recognizing the medical nature of certain dental procedures. This in turn increases the need for dental practices to file those procedures with their patients' medical plans. Therefore, dental practices must know how to file medical claims.

Take the difficulty out of dental-medical cross coding. This one-day workshop will provide the know-how to help your dental practice take the leap into dental-medical cross coding and become a part of the latest trends in cutting-edge modern dentistry. Attendees will review how to determine medical necessity, which procedures can be filed medically, and an examination of medical insurance plans. In addition, the appeal process of medical claims will be explained, as well as how to implement dental-medical cross coding if your office computer software does not provide the function. This course is an absolute MUST for every dental office manager, biller and doctor. Get every dollar you are due, and increase patient care at the same time!

  • Examine the importance and necessity of implementing a dental-medical cross coding system in your dental practice
  • Discover the many dental procedures that meet the "medically necessary" criteria for medical insurance
  • Dental insurance has one coding system—CDT. Medical insurance has multiple systems. This course will teach you all about these coding systems, and how they work together.
  • "Hands on" is the best way to learn. This course will show examples of dental-medical cross coded claims and class exercises that will make this even more impactful.
  • Identify why medical coding in the dental practice is so important
  • Examine how to use proper medical codes and forms
  • Ascertain how to implement dental-medical cross coding
  • Assess how your practice can handle a denial from your patient's dental plan that states that the procedure must be filed with the patient's medical plan
  • Identify how the process taught will help to protect your practice in this litigious society
  • Discuss how providing additional sources of benefits for your patients will make for happier and more loyal patients
  • Recognize that these happy patients can become great marketing tools for your practice
  • Discover that improved case acceptance can occur when patients know that they may possibly receive additional benefits from their medical plans
  • Discuss how increased case acceptance creates more profit
  • Describe how to simplify the creation of narratives and know when they will be needed
  • Evaluate your practice forms to be sure they are asking the right questions
  • Outline the importance of determining patient diagnoses for medical claims
  • Recognize the future need for determining diagnosis codes for dental claims
  • Identify online sources for completion of medical claims if your practice management software does not provide this
  • Discuss the possibility of adding more medically necessary dental procedures to your procedure mix
  • Evaluate your business office scripting
  • Assess if you are using insurance terminology correctly
  • Determine if you are asking the right questions when contacting insurance companies
  • Explain that the same multiple carrier rules apply to medical insurance plus a review of these rules
  • Complete a medical claim form during the class, to ensure comprehension
