Creative Arts Therapies: Making the Youth-Brain-Behavior Connection

PROGRAM DETAILS

Dysfunctional neurological processing is at the foundation of many behavioral disorders. Imaging studies have shown that dysfunctional neurological pathways tighten perceptual sets, limit problem solving and distort communication patterns. Out-of-control behaviors are a major concern for those working with young people. Research in psychotraumatology recommends non-standard interventions to counter the repetitive experience of traumatic memories in youth with PTSD. Creative experiences can help regulate emotional reactivity that stems from over-aroused and impulsive brain functioning. They can improve focusing abilities, attention and concentration levels, and communication skills, as well as foster more appropriate behaviors in groups.

This fun, interactive and informative workshop presents creative arts therapy approaches for mental health professionals, teachers and others working with behaviorally disordered youth. You will briefly review the latest research on brain anatomy and function to understand how creative experiences alter neurological functioning in children and adolescents. Special emphasis is placed on learning practical, self-soothing skills and behaviors to calm the autonomic nervous system. You will experience at least twelve practical and fun methods (including dance, music, visual art, drama and wordcrafting). The role of creative expression in healing trauma will be demonstrated through creative arts therapies, relaxation training, guided imagery and kinesthetically-based psychotherapies. Individual and small group practice of experiential structures is interspersed throughout the workshop so that participants will leave with a toolbox of new strategies to help achieve better outcomes with behaviorally disordered youth.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Actively learn 12 fun and practical techniques drawn from creative arts therapies, action-oriented psychotherapies, relaxation training and guided imagery
  • Utilize the creative experience to attain therapeutic and educational goals when working with youth with ODD, RAD, PTSD, ADHD and mood disorders
  • Pinpoint the relationship between difficult behaviors and dysregulated brain functioning
  • Develop confidence in your own potential for creativity and how to use it in the therapeutic or educational setting
  • Demonstrate 12 creative arts therapy techniques and identify how to apply them to differing functioning levels and behavior disorders
  • Explain the effects of action-oriented creative activities on behaviors and brain function
  • Use the process of "distract, diffuse and delight" to overcome client resistance
  • Discuss the impact of dysfunctional brain processing on the autonomic nervous system as related to behavior disorders
  • Determine how non-standard treatments and applications effectively address the nature and storage of traumatic memories
  • Integrate action-oriented activities with traditional therapeutic approaches
  • Match creative experiences and approaches to the client's level of functioning
  • Identify burnout prevention strategies relative to your own creative endeavors

What You Should Bring:

You will explore action-oriented methods. Please dress accordingly in comfortable clothes for movement. Please bring to the seminar:
Scissors
Tape
A small object (shell, stone, any item of interest for a visual/observational study)
