Functional Ergonomics Successful Interventions and Preventative Solutions for Work-Related Pain and Injuries Training Seminar

PROGRAM DETAILS

Ergonomic and Therapeutic Interventions for the True Workstation—The Human Body

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders associated with repetitive tasks and poor positioning are the most prevalent, expensive and preventable workplace injuries in the United States today. Musculoskeletal disorders account for $1 of every $3 spent on Workers Compensation in America and affect 1.8 million workers each year. Furthermore, many experts believe this estimate represents a significant under-reporting of the true incidence of ergonomic injury nationally.

The course explains how joint biomechanics, the Central Nervous System (CNS), muscles, and fascia specifically change and adapt based on the movements and postures assumed most often while performing common work-related tasks. The speaker spent several years performing movement studies using surface electromyography (sEMG). These studies showed underlying hidden protective muscle patterns which correlated with the patient's pain and dysfunction and with the postures and positions one assumed on a regular basis. Further, research suggests that the CNS can sometimes maintain these protective patterns long after the initial trauma or movement pattern is gone—leading to muscle imbalances, joint dysfunction, and chronic pain. The speaker developed specific protocols that addressed these patterns with great success, and he shares these integrated principles of Functional Ergonomics through this course. After completing the seminar, attendees will have the skills and competence to successfully develop injury prevention and integrative wellness programs, perform ergonomic assessments and develop intervention strategies for the millions of Americans suffering work-related pain and injuries.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

BRIAN McKEEVER, MPT, ATC, CEAS, has over 24 years of experience in Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology and Ergonomics. He and his wife opened the BioIntegrative Wellness Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he integrates his advanced training in many manual therapy techniques with specialized and clinically proven biofeedback methods to help balance the body, reduce stress, and improve patients' overall health. Brian began as an ATC at the High School and College level, then went on to work as a PT in many hospital and rehabilitation settings. After serving as Director of Physical Therapy for a national occupational health clinic, Brian opened a successful private practice and developed an ergonomics consulting business. As a consultant, he developed, implemented and held seminars on unique and effective wellness and injury prevention programs that save his clients hundreds of thousands of dollars associated with potential work-related injuries. In this capacity, he worked with the Intel Corporation for 10 years as well as other large companies, including Campbell's Soups, Pepsi, Southwest Airlines and Federal Express.

Brian earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from California State University in Fresno while also completing his Athletic Training Certification through the National Athletic Training Association. He received his Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Loma Linda University, where he was presented with one of the highest honors for a graduate—the Faculty Award. Since then, he has traveled both nationally and internationally to expand his knowledge, refine his skills, and find tools and resources to help him treat patients more effectively. This course is a culmination of over 15 years of research, clinical practice, development and implementation.
