PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Treatment Regimens for Various Breast Cancer Stages

Breast cancer, like many other disease states, can be approached on different levels. There are many different treatments involved with breast cancer. When do you use endocrine therapy? How about chemotherapy? Which regimen of chemotherapy should be used? Breast cancer has a staging progress. How does this affect treatment? How do estrogen, progesterone and HER2 Receptors affect diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer?

This seminar will discuss the staging process of breast cancer and how each stage relates to treatment. Therapies will also be discussed. What are the preferred treatments? When are certain treatment regimens used? Pharmacological treatments will be detailed in this program, including ones that are based on NCCN guidelines. These guidelines are established from evidence-based regimens. Each stage of breast cancer will be examined and appropriate treatments will be appropriated to each stage. This presentation will provide an understanding of breast cancer and the management of the disease.

 

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Describe the staging of breast cancer in detail
• Identify the estrogen, progesterone, and HER 2 receptors and how they affect the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer
• Examine the NCCN guidelines and how they are established
• Discuss the adjuvant endocrine therapies, adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies
• Summarize the preferred treatment regimens
• Describe bisphosphonates place in breast cancer
• Examine therapies and how they relate to the various stages of breast cancer

 

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

DOUGLAS DERITIS, PharmD, is a licensed pharmacist in New Jersey with 20 years of experience. He is currently the Clinical Coordinator of Pharmacy Services at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where he is responsible for clinical management of oncology patients. Dr. DeRitis has previously worked as a pharmacist for Deborah Heart and Lung Center and for Saint Clare's Medical Center, both in New Jersey. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from Rutgers University and is a member of the New Jersey Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
