Developing the Self-Regulated Learner Training Seminar

PROGRAM DETAILS

DESCRIPTION:

Executive Skills and Today's Child

Being able to listen, pay attention, think, and then act are the most important elements for a child's behavioral, emotional and academic success. The research is now clearer than ever: a child who can listen, pay attention, follow instructions, and persist on a task—even if faced with what seems to be giant hurdles and frustration—will achieve greater success in school and in life. Self-regulated learners have mastered the executive skills of goal setting, planning, organizing, prioritizing, memorizing, initiating, shifting, and self-monitoring. As a result of today's technologically advanced society, students must take greater responsibility for their independent learning in order to organize and integrate fast changing information available through online resources. Personal, academic and social success is more dependent than ever on the ability to manage time, organize and prioritize information, show flexibility in thinking, monitor progress and reflect on behavior. As a result, professionals who work with children and adolescents must be able to identify dysregulation in each or all of these areas and understand how to implement the appropriate strategies for developing and strengthening their executive skills.

This seminar is a comprehensive examination of the relationship between executive skills, self-regulation and personal, academic and social success. Emphasis will be placed on understanding internal brain structures and functions and their relationship to external manifestations of behavior, emotion and learning. Participants will learn how to recognize and target specific breakdowns in executive skills, understand the neural systems involved, distinguish co-morbid conditions that compromise effective use of executive skills, and design and implement evidence-based strategies for strengthening executive skills and self-regulated learning.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Highlight the key executive skills of impulse control, attention, memory, planning, organization, and self-monitoring as necessary for self-regulated learning
• Develop a brain-based understanding of executive skills and behavioral, emotional, and academic dysregulation
• Evaluate and identify underdeveloped executive skills in children and adolescents
• Apply methods for helping students strengthen executive skills and develop self-regulation
• Define executive skills, self-regulation, independent, and interdependent constructs
• Identify the key executive skills necessary for self-regulation
• Describe the brain-based functions of executive skills
• Explain the developmental progression of executive skills
• Evaluate strengths and weaknesses in executive skills
• Recognize executive skill breakdowns in diagnostic categories
• Outline specific interventions for executive domains
• Design and implement strategies to improve specific executive skills
• Discuss specific learning strategies for self-regulated learning
