PROGRAM DETAILS

Toe Walking: A Clinician's Approach

It is common for the practitioner to feel lost when a child presents with a toe walking gait pattern. Evaluation and treatment of these children are often frustrating for everyone involved and frequently result in inaccurate evaluation with ineffective intervention and poor achievement of results. Long term results are rarely achieved with either resultant surgical intervention or a reoccurrence of the problem. Establishing a specific method for treating this type of patient can be made less frustrating and more rewarding by asking the right questions and forming a deliberate approach.

This seminar will provide participants with evidence-based strategies for the effective evaluation, assessment, and treatment of pediatric toe walking. Through a systematic evaluation procedure, specific data will be used to direct the clinician to potential etiologies and the appropriate treatment plan for this abnormal gait pattern.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Identify specific etiologies relevant to pediatric toe walking
• Develop an organized evaluation approach and use the data to reveal various pathologies of pediatric toe walking
• Discuss etiology-specific and age-appropriate assessment and management strategies for the pediatric population
• Evaluate the neurological, sensory, and musculoskeletal development of upright mobility and its influence on the etiology, evaluation, and treatment of pediatric toe walking
• Describe the development of the foot and lower extremity, functional anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and biomechanics as related to pediatric toe walking
• Apply evaluation techniques to determine what the data reveals about specific etiologies of pediatric toe walking
• Examine appropriate treatment approaches for pediatric toe walking
• Explain why traditional treatment methods for toe walking such as surgery, passive stretching, serial casting, ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are often ineffective at addressing the true pathology of this gait abnormality
• Design an individualized treatment plan for the pediatric patient
• Gain advanced clinical assessment skills by analyzing case studies that demonstrate the specifics of evaluation, assessment and treatment
• Discuss the relationship between a toe walking gait pattern and its impact on the maturation of gait and balance skills
• Recognize the future consequences and impact of ineffective or incorrect intervention

What You Should Bring: Optional: A video and/or photographs (on a flash drive) of a pediatric patient with a gait or posture deviation to be assessed
