PROGRAM DETAILS

Crucial techniques for protecting your clients and yourself

Many manual therapists' assessment procedures consist of having clients complete a standard form copied from a book or website and then asking clients "Is anything bothering you?" or "Is there any area you'd like for me to concentrate on?" Unfortunately, though, clients do not always know what will make them feel better (especially if the pain they experience is caused by a dysfunction in another area of the body) and/or what they should tell practitioners for their own safety. Therefore, massage therapists and other manual therapy professionals must take responsibility for gathering assessment information as thoroughly as possible. Many clients have multiple medical conditions, medications and other considerations that may be pertinent to their therapy. Collecting this information and keeping up with the latest research on how certain conditions are affected by hands-on techniques can be a daunting task, but it is crucial to maintaining client safety and meeting legal and ethical responsibilities.

In this essential one-day course, attendees will learn how to evaluate their clients comprehensively—not only for reasons of safety, but also for more effective pain relief and improved client satisfaction. We will cover six different assessment techniques as well as how to create a comprehensive client health history including various components of health and disease. We will address the latest research findings on contraindications and review endangerment sites as they are critical aspects of the assessment process. Medications and their implications on massage strokes will also be analyzed. The hands-on component consists of whole-body assessments, postural and gait pattern assessments, and assessment of the body's soft tissues. Finally, we will put all of these assessments together to create a safe, informed, and individualized treatment plan that best serves your client's needs and exceeds their expectations.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Study current research findings to identify possible contraindications to massage therapy—whether medical, medicinal, physical, or psychological in nature
• Discuss common medications, their effects on the body and the appropriateness of massage while taking them
• Use the information gathered to create successful treatment plans with outcomes that surpass clients' expectations and make them repeat customers
• Discover the key elements for creating an effective client intake form and performing a thorough pre-massage interview
• Identify possible contraindications to massage therapy
• Perform thorough, whole-body assessments, including postural and gait assessments, to meet your clients' needs more safely and effectively
• Discover how to use observation and palpation as an assessment tool
• Discuss various types of medications and their implications for massage

What You Should Bring
Participants are asked to bring the following for the workshop portion of this seminar:

  • Massage table and linens (including a towel)
  • Shorts and tank-top
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes (no jeans)
