Group Counseling and Psychotherapy By: Jean Keim

PROGRAM DETAILS

Recognizing the critical and therapeutic process moments in group counseling work

Group counseling and group psychotherapy are powerful therapeutic modalities at the forefront of mental health treatment and may be used in a variety of settings. Managed care companies often insist on group interventions due to the economies of group treatment and research supporting the efficacy of group therapy outcomes. In mental health hospitals and outpatient practices, clients in group therapy grow, gain insight, benefit from peer support and feedback, and experience feelings of connection. Within school settings, group counseling has been shown to be effective and the use of group counseling addresses the high student–to-counselor ratios. Thus, group work is a highly effective option for many populations; however, clinicians without a clear understanding of the principles of group therapy may not have the skills needed to ensure the most successful outcomes for group members. Regardless of the level of experience in individual therapy, professionals must know how to manage group dynamics as well as overcome the challenges unique to group therapy in order to achieve effective group work.

In this comprehensive one-day course, attendees will gain a greater understanding of the crucial components of effective group counseling and psychotherapy from a highly qualified and experienced authority in therapeutic group work. The in-depth information, skills, and techniques will improve participants' ability to facilitate successful groups and includes information related to leadership, selecting the appropriate type of group for the clients involved, dealing with resistance and conflict, and more. Participants will leave the seminar with multiple group intervention tools as well as practical knowledge in the critical areas of multiculturalism, diversity, and ethics and their unique applications to group therapy.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Discover valuable methods for reaching the treatment goals of individuals through group therapy
• Examine the characteristics of different types of group therapy and determine when each is appropriate
• Discover group activities and interventions for each stage of group
• Recognize critical and therapeutic process moments as well as other factors that impact groups
• Develop skills necessary to maximize the therapeutic impact of process groups
• Increase and strengthen your group-based therapeutic skills to become a more effective group leader
• Discuss the impact of group on families, communities, and society from a systems perspective
• Explore and understand ethical issues unique to group as well as the impact of diversity on group processes and client growth

This course is offered for 6 hours of CE, including 1 hour of ethics and 1 hour of multicultural issues discussions.
