PROGRAM DETAILS

Successfully Add Allergy Management to Your Primary Care Practice

The allergy and asthma crisis in America is well documented. Allergic diseases affect more than 20% of the population (50 million people) and in the past 25 years asthma has tripled. At the same time, a growing shortage of allergists exists approaching critical levels. The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology indicates an estimated decline of 7% in practicing allergists from 2006 to 2020 with a likely demand increasing by 33% in the same period. Undoubtedly, primary care will continue to see the increasing numbers of patients battling allergic disease. However, a fundamental change must occur in the way primary care providers treat allergic disease. Studies indicate a 50% chance of misdiagnosing allergy and prescribing a medication when not necessary. The high cost of allergy medications has also had a drastic effect on the skyrocketing costs of treating allergic disease.

New testing and treatment modalities now make it possible for primary care providers to deliver evidence-based allergy and asthma care. The published guidelines for both allergy rhinitis and asthma recommend allergy testing when symptoms are persistent and/or have significant effect on quality of life. Once allergens are identified, preventive measures can be put into place and the possibility of initiating immunotherapy can occur. Immunotherapy is the only identified solution to desensitize patients to allergens. Two forms now exist for immunotherapy including traditional subcutaneous injections (allergy shots) and sublingual immunotherapy. With proper education and attention, immunotherapy in both forms can be provided by the primary care or specialty care provider.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Discover the benefits of incorporating allergy into your practice
• Discuss the prevalence and impact of allergic disease
• Examine the basic pathophysiology of allergy disease
• Describe the various diagnostic approaches to allergy and asthma
• Identify the various allergy testing techniques and how to implement in a primary care or specialty practice setting
• Discuss how to implement sublingual and subcutaneous immunotherapy in your practice
• Discover how to implement pulmonary function testing into your practice
