DSM-5® & Anxiety Disorders: Understanding the Diagnoses & Treatments

PROGRAM DETAILS

Applying the DSM-5®
Anxiety disorders continue to be the most prevalent type of behavioral health disorder. They affect 25% of the population over a lifetime. As a result of the adoption of the DSM-5®, behavioral health providers need to be aware of changes in the diagnostic system as they apply to anxiety disorders.

This workshop will present information about the changes to the Anxiety Disorders section in the DSM-5® including the addition of conditions that were formerly included in the Childhood-Onset Disorders section. Dr. Schneider will discuss examples of DSM-5®?s new Other Specified Disorders section and participants will learn about diagnostic tools and treatment methods for panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. Dr. Schneider will focus on clinical application of cognitive and other empirically-based therapies for these disorders with true case studies. In addition, attendees will also look at the latest research on childhood conditions such as separation anxiety and selective mutism. Attendees will acquire skills that they can immediately use in their clinical practices.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Distinguish three changes in the Anxiety Disorder section of DSM-5®
• Analyze biological and genetic factors in the etiology of anxiety disorders
• Describe current diagnostic criteria for panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder
• Apply evidence-based treatments for anxiety and related disorders
