PROGRAM DETAILS

Incorporate the Hot Area of Accent-Modification Services into Your Practice

This course is designed to educate participants about regional- and foreign-accent related communication concerns and provide practical skills for effective assessment and accent modification therapy. Accent-modification is a hot area of clinical practice, rapidly gaining ground in our globalized, multicultural world. Despite this great need, however, limited availability of resources, research, publications, and educational workshops limit an evidence-based and structured practice of accent-modification. This workshop is designed to present one-stop state-of-the-art information related to accented speech issues, and skills-based techniques for evidence-based assessment leading to informed therapy in accent-modification.

Participants will gain knowledge and insight into the nature of accented speech. Attendees will be able to identify specific communication and real-world difficulties related to accents, as separate from general biases and stereotypes held due to misinformation about accented speech. Significant attention will be paid to diagnostic criteria, step-by-step assessment methods, and compiling a Diagnostic Profile for clients, leading to structured therapy with numerous opportunities for hands-on skills development. Numerous demonstration samples will be provided for interactive learning experience. Case studies and an appropriate amount of time for questions and answers will also be provided. Participants will take home useful strategies, survey of available tools, and creative ideas to implement in their immediate practice.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Understand the unique difficulties of people speaking in nonstandard accents and dialects
• Examine the research and resources you would need to successfully offer accent-modification services
• Learn a leading assessment approach and step-by-step assessment methods resulting in a complete diagnostic profile of the client
• Using case studies, learn to design and adopt a structured therapy that yields measurable results in the client's life
• Identify the constituents and characteristics of accented speech
• Examine and clarify controversial philosophies and terminology related to dialect- and accent-related services
• Discuss how accented speech affects speakers' lives and how it impacts listeners' perceptions
• Identify the clear need for accent-modification services and identify the specific types of clients that will best benefit from these services
• Discuss an evidence-based, data-based model to assess dialect-and-accent-related communication difficulties
• Identify the broad goals and areas of assessment of accented speech, including the theoretical background and in-depth method to assess each area
• Outline methods to score and record results in each area of assessment
• Describe how to create a Diagnostic Profile of Scores, with degree of severity in each assessed area
• Identify how to prioritize goals and design and implement a successful therapy program that shows real-life success for clients

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

AMEE P. SHAH, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor in the Speech and Hearing program and director of the Speech Acoustics and Research Laboratory at Cleveland State University. Dr. Shah holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Audiology & Speech Rehabilitation, a Master of Arts degree in Linguistics, a Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology, a Master of Philosophy degree, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree. She pursued a Post-doctoral Fellowship at McGill University. Dr. Shah is certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) and has practiced as a bilingual speech-language pathologist for over 15 years, including seven years in New York City. Dr. Shah’s research interests involve the study of the processes of cross-linguistic speech production and perception, with a focus on foreign-accented English. This line of investigation is helping bridge the gaps between basic science research and clinical practice with bilingual and nonnative speakers of English.

Dr. Shah is the author of a leading assessment battery, "Comprehensive Assessment of Accentedness and Intelligibility" (CAAI), a practical resource for anyone working with this population. She is a noted speaker on foreign accents, accent modification, bilingual concerns, and multicultural diversity, presenting on these topics at nationally- and internationally-recognized platforms. She has peer-reviewed publications in various theoretical and clinical issues of foreign-accentedness. She is a recognized expert in the area of accents and is a frequently-invited reviewer and consultant on committees and boards with the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association. Dr. Shah's research experience, in conjunction with her wide clinical experience, make her a skilled and knowledgeable instructor.

TESTIMONIALS:

The CAAI approach is a scientific and robust approach to accent modification and just what we would look for as a tool to work with professionals in medicine, who are accustomed to an approach that includes data collection, then analysis, and then action. Dr. Shah’s program is entirely unique, in my experience in academic medicine. Dr. Shah offered us a program that was scientifically sound and rigorous.
Dr. Jennifer Hunt, Section Head, Surgical Pathology, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH

It was amazing that your excellent diagnostic tools quickly identified my flaws in my English speaking. After listening and comparing the paragraphs read by me and recorded before and after the training period, I sensed the substantial contrast. I was deeply moved by this significant change.
Dr. Qinping Yao, Rheumatology Specialist, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH
