PROGRAM DETAILS

Managing and Treating Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), or formulation of a thrombus in the deep venous system of the extremities, is a potentially life-threatening disease process that affects nearly 600,000 patients annually. Early detection and identification of common thrombogenic disease processes followed by prompt, appropriate intervention is vital in optimizing patient outcome and avoiding long-term sequelae.

This one-day seminar will utilize case studies to help practitioners appropriately diagnose and treat DVT as well as provide guidelines on patient follow-up and future thrombus prevention. Review of anatomy and pharmacology on common anticoagulation medications will be included. This seminar will provide you with the clinical tools to feel confident in recognizing patients with DVT and managing their care throughout the treatment process.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Explore a pharmacologic review of standard medical treatment in DVT
• Discuss a case review of interventional treatment options
• Identify and confidently treat Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) including criteria to use when considering admission for inpatient treatment, ICD-9 coding, and post care instructions
• Examine venous anatomy and the causes of DVT
• Identify the risk factors associated with the development of DVT
• Describe key clinical symptoms associated with DVT
• Discuss complications that can occur as a result of untreated DVT
• Conduct a differential diagnosis, rule out other common causes of leg pain
• Identify high risk patients who require inpatient treatment
• Examine the risks and benefits of common anticoagulation therapies
• Discover the importance of timely follow-up post treatment
• Discuss how to aid patients in the prevention of future DVT
