Building a Life Skills Tool Kit - Healthcare Seminar

PROGRAM DETAILS

Developing a Life Plan for High Functioning on the Autism Spectrum
Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are often not prepared for adult life as a result of insufficient understanding of the abilities and skills to make informed educational, financial, and vocational plans. Decision-making and life skills are often challenging and one may not know his or her rights as a disabled citizen and/or how to self-advocate. Deficiencies in social skills can lead to awkwardness in academic and professional settings as a result of difficulties making and maintaining friendships and knowing how to appropriately express oneself in adulthood. It often becomes the mental health professional's role to address these issues with both the client and the family.

This one-day seminar provides a workable blueprint to help guide adolescents on the Autism Spectrum to develop their own adult life plan or "tool kit." Participants will examine all aspects of the successful transition into adulthood from effective methods for teaching decision-making, self-advocacy, empathy, and social interaction skills, to understanding the laws of the disabled adult and finances, and even how to encourage career development and dating.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Discuss how to increase social, financial, and vocational independence
• Motivate and teach adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to develop social skills despite clinical challenges
• Increase empathy and advocate success in school and career development
• Design a life skills tool kit to help prepare adolescents with ASD and their families for the transition into adulthood
• Define High Functioning on the Autism Spectrum
• List and explain the relevant national laws that clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are most affected by in adulthood
• Identify ways of helping teens with ASD learn social interaction skills
• Describe the challenges and comorbidities associated with social interaction such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Alexithymia, and Face Blindness
• Examine the barriers to employment and how one on the Spectrum can overcome them
• List places adolescents with ASD can receive career guidance and information on technological accommodations
• Discuss what is involved in helping an ASD teen develop self-awareness for the professional setting
• Describe how to teach an adolescent with ASD about sexuality and appropriate sexual behavior
• Pinpoint resources to help adolescents on the Autism Spectrum and their families plan for the future

PRESENTER'S BIO

KEVIN T. BLAKE, PhD, PLC, is a recognized national authority on learning disorders and ADHD in children, adolescents, and adults. He has specialized for over 20 years in learning disorders and ADHD, and lives and works as a licensed psychologist in Tucson, Arizona. The interest in learning disorders, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorders were spurred by his own struggles trying to overcome his reading disorder/dyslexia and hearing impairment, which were initially diagnosed during the first year of his doctoral program at the age of 26. At the time, the early 1980s, not much was known about adults with learning disorders. As Dr. Blake struggled to learn about his own learning disorder, he decided to make his life's work the diagnosis and treatment of adults with learning disorders and ADHD. Dr. Blake earned his doctorate degree from Oklahoma State University and his dissertation research focused on self-esteem and anxiety in the learning disabled college student. When he started his professional life, he was one of a handful of professionals in the country with a focus on adults. Now he travels the country sharing his personal story and what he has learned about learning disorders, ADHD, and other neurobiological disorders with professionals who work with these populations, as well as individuals with these disorders and their loved ones.

Dr. Blake is a member of several state and national organizations, such as the American Psychological Association, International Dyslexia Association, Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders, Learning Disabilities Association, and the National Attention Deficit Disorder Association. He has been the facilitator of a Tucson support group for ADHD adults for several years. Additionally, he is a published author with articles having appeared in Attention!, LDA Newsbriefs, and Perspectives (of the International Dyslexia Association). Dr. Blake was a 1991 delegate to the National Institute for Literacy's "LEAD 2000 Congress," where he was a member of a special committee advising the U.S. Congress on diagnostic and remediation issues confronting learning-disabled adults. He is an accomplished and engaging speaker whose presentations incorporate germane information, practical how-to's, and appropriate life experiences.
