PROGRAM DETAILS
Effective Assessment and Treatment Planning
for the Shoulder Complex
The shoulder complex consists of four
articulations, often making the determination of pathology and intervention very
difficult for pathologies that occur in this anatomic region. The results of
clinical special tests often paint a confusing picture regarding the pathology
that may be present. Any uncertainty on the clinician's part regarding the
nature of the pathology present and the appropriate course of action can lead to
long delays in the recognition of a patient's problem and lengthy or
unsuccessful rehabilitation efforts. A thorough understanding of anatomic and
functional contributors of shoulder complex pathologies and the interpretation
of special tests will assist musculoskeletal clinicians in the early recognition
of shoulder musculoskeletal pathologies and enable appropriate referrals for
management and optimal treatment planning on the clinician's part.
This course, taught by Dr. Michael Gross, PhD, PT, FAPTA, a 26-year faculty
member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will examine the
anatomic factors and functional movement demands that may contribute to the
etiology of shoulder complex pathology. Special tests will be reviewed that will
assist in the early recognition of these pathologies. Current evidence regarding
conservative and post-operative management will also be reviewed to enable
effective patient intervention. Participants will leave this seminar with a
fresh perspective on strategies for assessing and treating patients with
shoulder complex pathology that can be implemented in their practice the very
next day.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Explain the etiology of common shoulder
complex pathologies and identify possible anatomic and other etiologic factors
Outline which special tests should be used to
identify complex shoulder pathologies and learn how to apply these tests with
your patients
Determine which patients are appropriate
candidates for conservative interventions and identify when surgery is
necessary
Make appropriate referrals based on clinical
assessments
Utilize effective mobilization techniques for
a variety of shoulder conditions
Devise an appropriate treatment plan and
enable effective patient intervention based on clinical findings
