PROGRAM DETAILS

Adapting CBT for younger clients

CBT has been found to be an effective short-term treatment for a number of psychological problems. Research also shows that this is an effective treatment for younger clients with emotional and behavioral problems. However, counselors and practitioners may sometimes struggle with the problem of adapting the methods and techniques of CBT to younger clients.

This workshop will clearly outline the cognitive-behavioral model as it applies to children and adolescents. The focus of the day will be on adapting the model and therapy to the cognitive/developmental level as well as the differing needs, issues, and motivational variables of younger clients with an emphasis on CBT within the family context. To ensure a thorough understanding, adaptations in CBT practice for this population will be described in a clear and practical manner. Attendees will learn the use of specific cognitive-behavioral procedures for helping depressed, anxious, and angry children, as well as effective strategies for managing behavioral problems in younger clients.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Recognize child and adolescent problems from a cognitive-behavioral perspective
  • Discover adaptations in CBT practice for working with children and adolescents
  • Apply skills in conceptualization and treatment planning using a CBT approach
  • Identify CBT procedures to deal with emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents
  • Develop strategies for using CBT in a family context
  • Examine ways to problem-solve difficulties which arise in applying CBT with younger clients
