Athletic Injuries in Youth Sports - An Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapy Seminar

PROGRAM DETAILS

Reduce the Likelihood of Injuries
Over the past decade, increasing attention has been placed on youth sports, resulting in a drastic transformation in the training methods implemented at these ages. Unfortunately, the effect has been to develop training philosophies and programs similar to those seen at the professional levels that are not age-appropriate for youth. Additionally, many sports have adopted a year-round schedule without any true off-season, which drastically reduces the capacity for physical and mental recovery from the stress of participation. As a result of this excessive and continual physical stress, clinicians are seeing a marked increase in overuse injuries involving the growth plates.

Athletic Injuries in Youth Sports provides sports medicine clinicians with a comprehensive review of the injuries specific to youth athletes, including the latest knowledge in injury assessment, prevention, and functional rehabilitation. The curriculum focuses primarily on the increasing incidence of growth plate injuries seen in the youth athletic population and the manner in which parents and coaches can reduce the likelihood of their occurrence. Extensive discussion will also center on the latest research into ACL injuries and patellofemoral disorders, and their relationship with core strength deficits and biomechanical abnormalities of the distal aspect of the lower kinetic chain. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Mr. Bernier demonstrates how to use the information from this seminar to develop injury prevention educational programs for parents and coaches in each participant's local market.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Identify the factors associated with the increased incidence of growth plate injuries in young athletes
  • Recognize the functional importance of the kinetic chain principle as it relates to injury prevention and skill performance for both the upper and lower extremities
  • Identify the clinical signs and symptoms of sport-specific conditions such as G.I.R.D. and internal impingement, and the appropriate principles of rehabilitation
  • Examine the latest research investigating the effect of pitch counts and types, and the rule changes that have been implemented in youth baseball as a result
  • Gain an understanding of the specific pathomechanics involved during ACL injuries and insight into the latest injury preventative methods
  • Assess the importance of core strength as a primary influencer of lower extremity postures
  • Identify the treatment options available for articular cartilage defects of the knee
  • Describe the physical and anatomical characteristics of youth athletes that increase the risk of chronic overuse injuries
  • Discuss the most common shoulder and elbow injuries seen in youth athletics
  • Review the classically-proposed theories of the causative factors associated with patellofemoral disorders

What You Should Bring

  • Exercise band
