Adapting Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Everyday Clinical Needs

Program Description:

The Game-Changing Guide to Integrating DBT in Your Practice
For clients who struggle to regulate and cope with their emotions, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can bring about lasting behavioral change even if they aren't diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Learn to adapt DBT to meet the needs of your practice and advance your clients treatment goals across a wide spectrum of behavioral health conditions. This one-day seminar will teach you to direct growth in each of the DBT skill areas (emotion regulation, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance) and guide efforts in moment-to-moment resilience and non-reactivity. Led by Dr. Andrew Bein, a seasoned instructor with an energetic, hands-on approach to education, you will quickly master strategies for enhancing motivation and strengthening client engagement, as well as explaining the theory and science of DBT accessibly to clients. By the end of the day, you will have all of the tools necessary to integrate DBT immediately and help your clients finally take control of their emotions and their lives.

What You Will Learn:

  • Describe the four skill modules and skill-based strategies for regulating emotions and maintaining safety
  • Adapt DBT for a range of patient and clinical needs in any setting
  • Apply exercises that reinforce DBT skills
  • Design successful logging methods and homework
  • Demonstrate use-of-self competence to enhance DBT effectiveness

What You Should Bring
Challenging case scenarios you would like to discuss.

Presenter's Bio

ANDREW BEIN, PhD, LCSW, has incorporated DBT principles in individual and group therapy for 15 of his 30 years in clinical service, recognizing and realizing its untapped potential for helping clients since the early years of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. At the time Dr. Bein graduated with his doctorate from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1994, DBT was primarily recognized for its breakthrough success with borderline personality disorder. In the years to come, however, his practice and collaboration with community mental health programs and schools would indicate time and again that DBT techniques can achieve remarkable results across populations.

Dr. Bein now serves as a professor of social work at California State University, Sacramento, in addition to his work as a practitioner, researcher, and nationwide speaker. A seasoned educator, his seminars blend evidence-based and practical-based guidance with compassion, humor, and clarity, reflecting his deep commitment to directly modeling positive clinician practice. His latest book, Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Wellness and Recovery: Interventions and Activities for Diverse Client Needs, illustrates how DBT can be integrated into everyday clinical use for immediate and enduring change.
