Helping Clients Succeed with Smart Technology
"There's an app for that?" We've all heard or uttered that phrase before, likely in lieu of discovering an app that either enhances your daily productivity or destroys it with a meaningless time waster. While our incorporation of technology continues to widen in our personal lives, have you ever thought, "Is there an app for that?" in the work you do with clients—more specifically, clients with special needs? More often than not, the answer is, "Yes, there's an app for that!" Yet sifting through the plethora of apps available can be a daunting and time-evaporating task. Besides, isn't it easier to lean solely on tried and true traditional interventions?

Cut through the clutter and discover immediate, engaging apps and other technological strategies you can use for your clients with executive dysfunction, autism, and/or learning disabilities. This hands-on course provides you with the resources and treatment tools to enhance organization, attention, behavioral, and emotional control in school-age children and young adults.
 

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Explore effective treatment strategies to improve client's accessibility, focus/engagement, executive functions, sensory regulations, and emotional control
• Discover apps that address deficits for more effective outcomes in education and therapy
• Practice the best methods to finding apps that support each client's needs
• Discuss treatment scenarios as a group to identify difficult issues and problem solve common and unique situations
• Determine executive function deficits that most commonly affects school-age children
• Analyze the various learning challenges school-age children and young adults typically encounter

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

POLLY BENSON, OTR/L, is a licensed Occupational Therapist with more than 20 years of clinical experience working with school-aged children who have special needs or physical disabilities. Currently, she works with a school-based services company called Comprehensive Therapy Consultants. Ms. Benson focuses on evaluation and treatment of students with various levels of deficits. In her work, she has effectively implemented individualized treatment strategies and goals using the power of smart technology. Ms. Benson served as the Lead Occupational Therapist on the Assistive Technology team, and, as a result, was recognized for her involvement in an iPad pilot study within the county school system. She utilized technology during her time as an owner and operator of a fitness facility for children, implementing exergame technology for weight loss. Because of her extensive experience combining treatment and technology, Ms. Benson has authored numerous presentations and spoken nationally for several conferences and workshops. She received her degree in Allied Medicine from The Ohio State University and is an active member of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
