DSM-5 Diagnosis & Treatment: What is the New Normal?

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Conquer Your Diagnostic Dilemma!
We are suffering from diagnostic inflation and the excessive use of medication to treat the problems of everyday life. Psychiatric diagnosis is inherently subjective and fallible because fuzzy boundaries separate normality from mental disorder. An accurate diagnosis can save a life; an inaccurate one can destroy a life. It is imperative that clinicians have a solid understanding of DSM-5® to determine accurate diagnoses and treatment plans for their clients.

Dr. Frances, Chair of the DSM-IV® Task Force, shares over 40 years of experience in diagnosis and treatment to explore the nitty-gritty details of the common DSM® disorders and provide clinical guidance toward accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment selection. Uncover the extent of diagnostic inflation, establish proper applications of diagnosis, and discover what you can do to combat over-diagnosis and over-medicalization of clients. Participants will examine the potential challenges of new DSM-5® disorders and how to appropriately use these diagnoses in clinical practice. Attendees will walk away with a thorough understanding of the history, development, and disorders of DSM-5® and feel comfortable using these diagnostic criteria to determine an appropriate treatment plan.

DSM, DSM-IV-TR, and DSM-5 are registered trademarks of the American Psychiatric Association. The American Psychiatric Association is not affiliated with nor endorses this seminar.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Define mental disorders and distinguish them from everyday problems
• Identify new DSM-5® disorders and explain the purpose of DSM®
• Describe the history, purpose, and future of diagnosis
• Determine how to choose the right treatment based upon an accurate DSM-5® diagnosis
• Summarize potential challenges of new DSM-5® disorders and articulate their appropriate usage
• Recognize causes and consequences of diagnostic inflation
