From Turmoil to Tranquility: Assess, Conceptualize, & Treat Family Discord  -  Social Workers Training Seminar

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Family issues are often an integral part of clients' difficulties, even when the entire family is not the target client. Knowing how to successfully work with families is an essential component of effective clinical work, especially since clinicians often find that individual therapy morphs into family work. Encouraging clients to bring their family into session, figuratively or literally, is an important tool in meaningful intervention. In this interactive seminar, Dr. Avidan Milevsky uses the latest research and clinical work in family dynamics to share multiple interventions for family turmoil at various stages of the lifespan. Structural, communication, cognitive, and behavioral approaches to family therapy will be examined and tailored to specific family relationships, including unique issues of working with multicultural, blended, and special needs families. Practitioners assisting both individuals and families will gain effective interventions for producing healthy family functioning.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Examine theories of family development and systems perspective
• Articulate issues of healthy family structure and functioning
• Apply assessment skills and tools to identify disruptive family dynamics
• Recognize specific problems, apply interventions, and create a healthy foundation to enhance young family functioning
• Analyze effective strategies to address real-life communication challenges
• Develop goals and interventions to address complex issues in older families
• Assess family strategies for working with diverse populations

TESTIMONIALS:

"Dr. Avidan Milevsky, a nationally recognized expert in clinical psychology, is a most dynamic and engaging lecturer. His presentations are timely, relevant, and provide practical advice for clinicians and parents alike."
David H. Rosmarin, PhD
Cambridge, MA

"Dr. Milevsky is an engaging presenter. He takes research, which can often be dry and not very exciting, and transforms it into a presentation that not only informs, but also educates the participant. A number of participants learned new tools they planned to implement in both their work and at home with their own family."
Jo Anne Renton, Chair, Child Protection Partnership
Prince William, VA

"Dr. Milevsky's workshop for our coalition of service providers was engaging, meaningful, and helpful training on family relationships and how our service providers can support families in enhancing relationships...The workshop was so well-received that several members immediately began plans to invite him back to speak to a larger group of service providers!"
Sonia Quinonez, MSW, Executive Director, SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia
Alexandria, VA
