5 Crucial Skills for Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Trauma-Informed Approach  -  Therapists / Social Workers Training Seminar

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Seamlessly Integrate DBT with Other Models for Improved Outcomes
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers a range of trauma-informed tools for helping people change ineffective patterns of behavior, such as self-harm, suicidal thinking, and substance abuse. In this course, you'll learn how to apply and sequence DBT to help clients increase their emotional and cognitive regulation, recognize the triggers that lead to reactive states, and assess which coping skills to apply to help avoid undesired reactions. Practice effective mindfulness exercises for accepting and tolerating the powerful emotions that emerge when challenging clients' habits or being exposed to upsetting situations. Explore strategies for calmly recognizing negative situations and their impact, rather than becoming overwhelmed or hiding from them, and discuss conversational tools for assertiveness and interpersonal problem solving.

The model was originally designed and developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to treat the most untreatable population in the field: clients with borderline personality disorder. To this day, DBT remains the only model that successfully treats this population, but in recent years, DBT has quickly emerged as a frontline treatment to a host of other psychiatric disorders as well (including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and PTSD).

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Define the five skill sets of DBT
• Evaluate strategies and exercises for helping clients develop mindfulness, dialectical thinking, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness
• Identify triggers that lead to reactive states, and assess which coping skills to apply to help avoid undesired reactions
• Integrate other treatment models into a DBT framework
• Sequence DBT in a trauma-informed, evidence-based manner
• Discuss adaptations of DBT for a wide range of clinical needs
