Bridging the Gap between the Rising and the Retiring - Multi- Generational Workforce

Overview

We have at least three divergent generations in today’s workplace—employers and employees are constantly dealing with growing gaps in multigenerational perceptions of appropriate ethics in the workplace.

Why Should You Attend

We have at least three divergent generations in today’s workplace—employers and employees are constantly dealing with growing gaps in multigenerational perceptions of appropriate workplace behavior.

What’s changed? With so many generations in the workplace, employers and staff face new challenges including: coping with different work ethics, values, expectations of work-life balance, approaches to importance of teamwork, communication styles, and relationships to authority to name a few. New entrants to the workforce are increasingly accustomed to a global, technology-driven environment, while not-so-techno-savvy Baby Boomers are facing new economic realities and delaying retirement. Recruiting, retaining, and managing across generational divides can be a daunting task!

Areas Covered in this Webinar

In this presentation, you will gain valuable insights into WHY each generation thinks and behaves the way it does; learn what the current conflicts are and ways to resolve them; and gain key strategies for attracting, on-boarding, and retaining each age group, particularly the Millennial generation.

In this interactive session, you will learn:

1. Who are the Boomers, Gen-Xers and Millennials and what societal events shaped their view of life and work?
2. What are different perceptions between older and younger workers in such areas as loyalty, work ethic, work-life balance programs and attitudes toward technology?
3. What are the expectations of the “Millennials,” and how do you incorporate into your workforce this “next greatest generation”?

Speaker Profile

Since 1994 Shira Harrington has been helping employers and job seekers successfully find one another. Developing a management and executive recruiting practice within the association industry and more recently a career consulting practice, Shira is keen on helping her clients identify their optimal match. For job seekers, her expertise is in exploring career goals, crafting powerful resumes that catch the eye of recruiters like her and preparing for engaging interviews.

Shira is a regular speaker at Beltway Job Search Partners, MBC Career Network Ministry and 40-Plus of Greater Washington. She is also an active volunteer leader in ASAE (American Society for Association Executives) and founded an executive peer roundtable entitled SAFE (Small Association Forum for Executives) which provides a forum for best practice sharing among small staff association executives.

In addition, Shira plays an active role in the Washington, DC metropolitan human resources community. She is past President of the Human Resources Leadership Forum and was Vice President of Programs for the Human Resources Association of the National Capital Area. Additionally she runs a monthly brown bag lunch for HR professionals in the nonprofit and association sector.

Shira also is a consultant and presenter on managing the multigenerational workforce. As a subject matter expert, she brings her extensive research and her unique, ´real world´ perspective of the world at work to bridge the perceived gaps between the generations and prepare executives for the coming labor shortage. Differences in work ethic, life values, work-life expectations, teamwork, communication styles and relationship to authority are just some of the challenges facing employees of each generation. Moreover, as Baby Boomers prepare to retire, employers are likely to be short-handed unless succession planning begins now.

Shira has been published in the monthly magazine of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, quoted in Federal Computer Weekly, profiled in the Washington Business Journal (June 1, 2007), interviewed in Bottom Line Briefing (January 2009) and is a contributing author to a new book, Motivating the Millennial Knowledge Worker (Spring 2009).

Shira earned a Masters degree in Public Relations with a focus on employee communications from the University of Maryland at College Park.
