PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Things You Didn't Learn in School about Clinical Decision Making

The composition and structure of all of the musculoskeletal tissues determines their mechanical behavior as well as the mechanisms by which they are injured. Any uncertainty on the clinician's part about the biomechanics of these tissues can lead to a longer recovery time for the patient and increase the possibility of re–injury. A thorough understanding of these concepts can help musculoskeletal clinicians plan injury prevention programs, make more sensitive evaluations of injuries, and plan and implement effective treatment programs for injured tissues. This enables the clinician to reduce both the incidence of initial injuries and facilitate more optimal healing of injured tissues.

This one–day seminar is the culmination of 30 years of research at UNC Chapel Hill's Human Movement Science and Athletic Training graduate programs. Dr. Gross and his students have scoured the literature to identify factors that explain injury of the musculoskeletal tissues, as well as interventions that promote healing and limit injury recurrence. Attendees will examine the relationship between tissue pathology and an analysis of forces internal and external to the body, as well as the function of each musculoskeletal tissue. Because injuries often occur more easily in older patients, the general effects of aging on musculoskeletal tissues will be discussed in detail. Additionally, to ensure a thorough understanding of the subject, case studies will be reviewed, along with questions from the audience. Participants will leave this seminar with a fresh perspective on working with the musculoskeletal system and with new interventions they can take back and use in their practice the very next day.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

•Evaluate strategies for protecting articular cartilage from further damage, keeping the original equipment, and avoiding total joint replacement

•Discuss comprehensive strategies for making sure repairs of meniscal and labral tears are successful

•Identify superior techniques for treating first–time muscle strains so they don't recur

•Develop effective protocols treating patients who already have had many muscle strain recurrences so that they have no additional recurrences

•Recommend methods for protecting tendon pulley mechanisms from tensile stress, compressive stress, and frictional abrasion

•Describe effective strategies for rehabilitating chronic tendinosis versus acutetendonitis
 

PRESENTER'S BIO

Michael Gross, PhD, PT, FAPTA has over 35 years of experience as a licensed physical therapist, specializing in biomechanics and orthopaedic assessment/treatment. Dr. Gross has maintained a consistent clinical practice for all of these years, currently seeing patients 2 days per week at his faculty practice, in addition to serving as a professor in the Human Movement Science and Physical Therapy doctoral programs at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has earned the Teaching Excellence Award from UNC Chapel Hill's School of Medicine and APTA's Margaret L. Moore Award for Outstanding New Academic Faculty.

A Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association, Dr. Gross has 69 refereed journal publications in the Journal of Orthopaedic Sports Physical Therapy, Physical Therapy, and the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy, among others, and he has served on numerous editorial review boards throughout his career. In addition, he has given well over 300 regional, national, and international presentations, which have been highly rated by attendees for their balanced blending of knowledge, skill, and humor.
