Capacity and Competency in Medical Care Decision-Making: Critical Components in the Ability to Understand

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

When it comes to making important life decisions, things can get complicated. Whether it's deciding on a medical treatment, how to managing finances, or continuing to drive a car safely. ...someone must make the choice. As advancing age, illness, and mental status changes who is the most appropriate person to make these decisions, determining who is most fit to make these decisions is critical. Often patients, families, and providers need to appropriately assess and determine whether adults can make these decisions or require guidance/assistance from others. As such, understanding where, when, and how to determine a person’s capacity or competence is of paramount importance.

This one-day seminar will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to differentiate between having capacity and being competent, to identify cases where an assessment of decision-making ability would be of benefit, and to fully understand the specific steps involved with the assessment of decision-making ability in adults. In addition, you will learn common factors which can impact adult decision-making. The course also provides quick-guides/check-lists to assist providers with the assessment of capacity in medical care settings, as well as a detailed overview of ethical principles designed to protect the rights of patients under the Mental Capacity Act. You will leave knowing your role in the process of determining a patient’s decision making abilities, the essential providers/professionals necessary in the determination of patient’s capacity, and the important role of family, guardians, surrogates, conservators, and POAs in decision-making. Finally, the course offers helpful skills to assist you to more effectively communicate information about capacity and competence with patients, families, advocates, and other health care providers.
