This seminar is designed for social workers, counselors, psychotherapists, guardian ad litems, psychologists, nurses, social service employees, case managers, school safety professionals and attorneys.

This one-day seminar is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to appropriately respond to crisis situations which may be potentially violent in the workplace.

At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

• State factors of verbal and nonverbal communication which may escalate and de-escalate crisis situations.

• Distinguish between therapeutic vs. non-therapeutic techniques of intervention.

• Cite the levels of anxiety escalation and the appropriate interventions.

• Demonstrate interventions which de-escalate a confrontational verbal exchange.

• Define horizontal violence.

• Employ limit setting techniques in a therapeutic environment.

• List the three causes of aggressive behavior

• Identify major human and environmental factors that contribute to assaultive behavior.

• Describe staff interventions to diffuse anger.

• Discuss the impact of horizontal violence on patient escalation.

• State the benefits of a designated team leader.

• Verbalize the least restrictive measures prior to restraint/seclusion.

• Demonstrate the use of physical restraint.

• State patient risk factors for restraint use.

• Incorporate restraint use in the advanced directive procedure.

• Explain patient care actions for the prevention of restraint death/post restraint procedure.

• Describe the legal implications of restraint documentation.
