When to use focus groups versus depth interviews and other qualitative research methods.

How to plan a qualitative research study and how to develop the discussion outline.

What to look for in evaluating moderator skills and the quality of the resulting research.

What to do about potential focus group problems such as dull groups and dominant respondents.

DESIGNING QUALITATIVE RESEARCH: THE OVERALL STRATEGY: How qualitative research fits into the overall research process, why qualitative research is conducted, and typical research applications. Determining the appropriateness of qualitative versus quantitative research and deciding among various qualitative formats.

DESIGNING QUALITATIVE RESEARCH: THE SPECIFIC STUDY: Determining the number of interviews, which markets, and respondent profile. Pointers for selecting moderators and the use of in-house moderators. Mini-workshop.

MANAGING THE QUALITATIVE PROJECT- PRIOR TO THE INTERVIEWS: How to locate facilities and work with them the day of the groups. Common recruiting problems and solutions. Working with the moderator on development of the discussion guide.

HOW TO SEQUENCE A FOCUS GROUP: The recommended format for asking respondents the right questions in the appropriate order. Examine the purpose of each phase, what topics should be addressed, and behaviors the moderator should demonstrate. Video of an actual session.

LEARNING FROM VARIOUS RESPONDENT STYLES: You will learn how to control dominant respondents; how to "liven up" dull sessions; how to deal with unqualified respondents; and when to use co-moderators. Mini-workshops.
