2014 National Fire Alarm & Signaling Code - Industrial Training

A Practical Approach to the National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72)


3 day Hands-On


This course is a subcomponent of:

National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code/NICET® I & II


Being up-to-date with basics of the National Fire Alarm Code® (NFPA 72) will help improve your fire alarm and signaling system’s reliability. Learn the fundamentals of fire alarm systems, fire alarm equipment for dwelling units, initiating devices, emergency communication systems (including mass notification) and more. Gain knowledge to ensure that your fire alarm system is working properly to achieve maximum reliability, safety and compliance. If you’re planning on taking the NICET Certification exams, we recommend the full five-day course. (The NICET exam can be taken through NICET.)

This course is a three-day segment within the broader five-day course National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code/NICET® I & II. If you want to prepare for the NICET exam, you should register for the five-day course which includes exam prep.

Fundamentals of Fire Alarm and Signaling Systems

  • Terminology, definitions and required documentation
  • Primary and secondary power supply requirements
  • Determining proper sizes for batteries and battery chargers
  • System operation and compatible components

Fire Warning Equipment for Dwelling Units

  • Minimum and suggested detection requirements
  • Household vs. protected premises fire warning equipment
  • Protected premises and proprietary fire alarm systems
  • Circuit designations and repetitive deficiencies (circuits and pathways)
  • Component location requirements
  • IDC, SLC, and NAC circuit installation requirements and pitfalls

Fire Alarm Systems Initiating Devices

  • Principles of operation of the various automatic detectors
  • Choosing the right detector for the right location
  • Installation points and repetitive deficiencies
  • Requirements of concealed detectors
  • Environmental factors in smoke detection
  • Smoke detection for air duct systems
  • Detectors in high air movement areas

Notification Appliances for Fire Alarm and Signaling Systems

  • NFPA, ADA and UFAS requirements for notification appliances
  • Notification appliance location requirements
  • Determining proper wire sizes
