Training Course Syllabus:

PROGRAM DETAILS

Competent health care providers have to deal with many different aspects of their patients´ lives -- issues such as social, financial, relationship and cultural. All of these areas are included within the concept of "Complementary and Alternative Therapies." Your patients may be using herbs, meditation, massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy and even consuming certain foods in an effort to improve their health. They may need some direction and information about the potential benefits and risks of these therapies, whether they are substituting them for medications or using along with medications.

In this one-day seminar, you will learn about these "traditional" or "cultural" therapies, as well as gain an appreciation of the rich history surrounding the uses of the Complementary and Alternative Therapies. Additionally, you will understand how modern medicine has begun incorporating these other ways of healing. Seeing how these can help your patients get better and move forward will be an invaluable learning experience, and will help you broaden the horizon of your pharmaceutical expertise. You will learn new -- and old -- treatments for everything from hormonal imbalance to alcoholism. You will be able to educate your patients on the potential benefits and risks of what they may be adding or substituting either with or for traditional medications and treatments.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Discern non-pharmaceutical interventions for common health problems your patients experience

  • Recognize benefits as well as problems that might be associated with the use of "folk," "ethnic," or "cultural" treatments

  • Appreciate how the needs of the body and the mind should both be addressed in helping your patients heal

  • See how "modern medicine" is incorporating complementary and alternative therapies into current practice

  • Discuss different types of complementary and alternative therapies

  • Identify how utilization or omission of these therapies can facilitate better therapeutic outcomes for patients

  • Examine social, religious and cultural aspects affecting the use of these therapies

  • Describe specific benefits and risks when using complementary and alternative therapies

  • List various herbal supplements your patients use regularly
