PROGRAM DETAILS

Running has long been recognized as one of the most popular forms of exercise. It is an attractive means of exercise shown to reduce many health risks such as heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, stroke, osteoporosis, colon cancer and other cancers. Running is widely categorized as a highly effective form of aerobic exercise, known to improve cardio-pulmonary function and endurance. Conversely, overuse and overstress of certain structures and tissues can result in disorders related to excessive running. Appropriate training is essential to define skills in assessment of running mechanics, conducting physical exams specific to running and targeting performance enhancement activities. Not only will the skills and techniques outlined in this seminar pinpoint the root of the problem, they will allow optimal rehabilitation and increase the runner's speed.

This one day seminar focuses on developing strategies for not only treating running-related injuries, but also developing improved speed in your athletes. Treating and training athletes requires us to completely understand the anatomy, mechanics and variables of running. Getting to the origin of a problem-causing injury or limited performance is the most important step. Course participants will explore techniques and assessment skills specific to running in "hands-on" lab sessions and use of video technology can help them return to their rehabilitation settings with applicable concepts and skills. Clinicians will come away excited about trying new, practical techniques that produce results, and in turn, running rehab patients will demonstrate a more positive attitude about their recovery.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Apply techniques suitable for patients who want to prevent running injuries, patients who need to return to a healthy state after an injury and patients who need to enhance their running ability

  • Examine evaluative assessment techniques to determine physical limitations contributing to running related injuries

  • Correlate running gait and clinical findings to determine the causes of running-related injuries

  • Define anatomical and biomechanical factors that affect running efficiency and performance

  • Implement injury prevention/coaching drills for developing proper running mechanics

  • Apply a systematic approach to examining the lower back, hip, knee, leg and foot for formulating an effective treatment plan
  •
  • Assess running gait and correlate clinical findings to determine the cause of running-related injuries

  • Determine the presence of biomechanical faults throughout the kinetic chain

  • Understand anatomical and biomechanical factors that affect running efficiency and performance

  • Design rehabilitation programs and coaching strategies based on movement fault correction

  • Implement prevention/coaching drills for developing proper running mechanics

  • Examine the entire lower extremity, from back pain to hip abduction contracture to fractures of the tibia, fibia and foot
