Training Course Syllabus:

Clinical Supervision in Behavioral Health: Building Skills for Ethical and Effective Practice

PROGRAM DETAILS

Clinical supervision has become the means by which all behavioral/allied health practitioners are taught to become ethical, competent professionals, yet few supervisors receive sufficient, specific training to prepare them for their critical role. Clinical supervision, while appearing on the surface to be similar to psychotherapy and counseling, is a different relationship than psychotherapy or counseling in that it has unique qualities and characteristics that set it apart. It requires the development of new knowledge and expertise. Many supervisors are promoted due to their excellent clinical skills rather than because of their training as a supervisor, thus perpetuating the mistakes of their supervisors. Supervisors are responsible, ethically and legally, for the work and development of the supervisees, as well as patient/client care. Supervision is a balancing act between the needs of both.

Promotion into supervision can no longer be based on clinical skills. The clinician, regardless of level of education, credentials, field, populations served or work experience, must develop a separate set of skills and knowledge base to become a competent and effective supervisor who can handle a myriad of ethical, clinical and supervisee situations. Dr. Clark-Patterson will offer guidance to build or enhance supervision skills and strengthen critical judgment and relationship skills. Through concepts taught in this seminar, participants will be able to more effectively do their job and become comfortable in the role of a clinical supervisor.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Explore best practice fundamentals of clinical supervision and the role of the clinical supervisor
  • Learn how to avoid ethical and legal mistakes
  • Identify what defines a culturally competent, self-aware, ethical supervisor
  • Define strategies for stress reduction to prevent burnout and staff turnover
  • Discuss whether or not supervision nightmares can be avoided
  • Identify effective and ineffective supervisory practices
  • Develop a plan for clinical supervision
  • Discuss how to manage personal and interpersonal issues
  • Discuss how to address transference and countertransference with supervisees
  • Identify what model of supervision fits for you
  • Explore techniques for working with difficult supervisees
