Defusing Power Struggles

PROGRAM DETAILS

Just as a fish takes the bait of a skilled fisherman, we often get caught in unproductive communication patterns with students, parents, and administrators, unaware of what is happening or how to stop it. We fight valiantly only to be landed in somebody else's net of influence. In order to help our clients, our students and ourselves, we must understand the root causes of power struggles and find techniques that effectively help us manage negative interactions.

This seminar will examine why power struggles develop, covering developmental issues and expectations, as well as personality clashes and control issues. Attendees will explore how to recognize when they are getting pulled into a power struggle and how to "throw the hook" to avoid getting suckered in. Participants will contrast effective and ineffective strategies and examine critical components needed to defuse power struggles. Cognitive strategies to help maintain control of emotions and how professionals can develop emotional self-care will also be examined. Special situations (power struggles with adolescents) and case studies focusing on interactions with students, parents and administrators, will extend our knowledge to apply the principles to situations we encounter daily.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Discover why power struggles develop - and how to prevent them from even starting
  • Recognize the behavioral, physical and emotional cues of power struggles
  • Apply defusing strategies to a variety of settings, including behavioral issues at school, home and in the clinic
  • Generate win/win solutions to challenging conflicts
  • Discuss current research outlining the most effective approaches to defuse power stuggles
  • Avoid the trap by recognizing the bait: identifying effective and ineffective communication patterns
  • Minimize power struggles with adolescents and discover how to teach them the power of healthy communication
  • Applying the strategies to a variety of settings, such as home, classroom, principal's office and clinic
  • Outline guidelines to help overcome classroom conflicts
